Though my own songs were more on the pop side musically, my lyrics were hardly that and became sharpened, less wandering, more to the point, because of our gatherings. Jack was a pleasure to be around even when he was blowing steam about some irksome politician or situation. I became a regular attendee, making my world that much richer for all the great people i came to know and share such personal thoughts in song with. His loss is deep and wounding to me. When John Lennon died I felt the world was so much poorer. I feel that same way about Jack's loss, with the difference that Jack was my friend and it hurts even more.

Re: Mary Travers Leukemia Relapse

Hi Mary,

Please know that I am praying and have many candles burning in your name that you might become well and free of the your illness. You have been a part of my life as far back as I can remember.

Hoping you get well soon.

I thought she was so jaw-droppingly hot, I e-mailed a fan letter on the spot, telling CNN she was much too attractive to keep hidden on a night schedule. I can't be sure, but I think they showed it to her within the hour; she started smirking on camera shortly thereafter.

That was several years ago. I lost track of her, then saw her again just recently -- again, in the middle of the night. She's still a babe!

Re: Mary Travers Leukemia Relapse

Hi Mary,
I enjoy your music. You guys are a great folk group. I watch my videos of you guys almost every week. I will keep praying for you. My favorite song is This Land Is Your Land. My dad passed away this year and you guys were on tape at the service singing Blowin' In The Wind. Columbus and Columbus musicians have always had the reputation of being square as hell, but not only was the COFF bad, it was laughably bad.

I had the opportunity to watch Phil and Ann Case perform to an absolutely empty field, I watched an "authentic Irish folk band" strum-strum-strumming their pretty little chords on their Ovation guitars along with their electric bass.

I also had the opportunity to "jam" with authentic, traditional, electric lap steel players, authentic, traditional electric bass guitars and at least one authentic, traditional electric Gibson Flying V look-alike all plugged into authentic, traditional electric Marshall Half-Stack amplifiers. Then they would all strum-strum-strum REALLY REALLY SLOW versions of 60's country top forty songs. whoooo-hoooo! You had to see it to believe it...

Fortunately, the "jam tent" was WAY over in the back corner, presumably where actual playing folk musicians "wouldn't bother anybody". Not that there was much chance of that happening as the "jam" sessions were mostly thirty or so people sitting quietly with cheap import guitars in their laps who would struggle with a few chords then shrug their shoulders, giggle and then quit.

The food was every bit as bad as last year, and somebody (anybody) needs to figure out how to run a concession to avoid the forty minute waits. A hot dog stand at a local high school football game is better run and considerably cleaner. (maybe one of the Columbus folk art-eests could ask someone who has actually done this kind of work before...)

Leave it to Columbus to suck the life right out of what anywhere else in this state is a vibrant living tradition.

See you at Clifftop…

Re: Nanci Griffith Featured This Week, plus Rosemary Church and Tim Horton’s

I have read the same as you about her bio. In this case there is absolutely nothing subtle I would want to try to say. It's time to be blunt. It's time to call a liar a liar.

The chords are (with a possible variation or two):

F C G am F C G C

I believe I recorded it with the capo on either the 2nd or 3rd fret, using the above chord shapes.

Re: Some Random Thoughts and Some New Adds

With all due respect, I disagree with the comments about "Liar, Liar". While it may be a matter of taste, I think Chuck's song is a strong political comment, without being obnoxious. I actually liked it a lot. Now all I have to do is to figure out the chords....

Re: Mr. Flugel and the Conquistador

Chances are, the tune is called "Feels So Good", from Chuck Mangione's album of the same name.

It could also be "Give it All You Got", which was the main theme that ABC used for their coverage of the 1980 Winter Olympics. My money would be on "Feels So Good."

Re: Mr. Flugel and the Conquistador

Hello -

I found your site because I am having a "there's a song in my head and it won't leave until I hear it" moment. In the late 70's or early 80's, there was a flugel horn instrumental (no vocals at all) that was getting a lot of rock station radio play. At least it was in Chicago, because I remember hearing it on the radio when my mom would drive us around. Not to mention the trumpet and flugel horn players in the band copying it whenever possible. I know it's not much to go on - yeah, there was this popular flugel horn song 20 years ago, do you know it? - but I am now living in London with my husband who is from New Zealand, and the 4 people I've sung it to so far think I'm nuts.

Which I am, but the song does exist. Do you have any idea what song I'm remembering?

Re: Hem, The Cottars and More

I love listening to the online folk festival--thanks for all the hard work!

I'd be especially glad if the 'you're listening to the online folk festival; it's just like a real folk fesitval without all the sweaty people and overpriced vegetarian food' announcment (and its ilk) were removed. It was funny the first time, but the 50th time it's being to wear a bit...
